Taylor was very good friends with many others in The Bean Trees. Lou Ann, Mattie, Esperanza, and Estevan were her closest friends and helped her grow and become grounded in Tucson, Arizona. When Mattie invited Taylor, Esperanza, and Estevan to come to a clearing with her to watch the rain come, since there had been a drought for so long. Mattie said to Taylor, “Come on, I want you to smell this.” And then later Taylor says, “...the air had sparks in it.” (Kingsolver 168). Mattie was so happy to share the experience of the rain hitting the scorched land that she had to share it with her friends. While they were driving to the clearing, Taylor describes the air as though it has an electric feel to it. She is so happy to be with her friends.
