The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was a nightmarish obstacle to all slaves, because it “allowed for the capture and return of runaway slaves within the territory of the United States” (“history.com”). These laws took away the slaves’ hope of escaping to the North, because now as long as they were in the United States they were in danger of being found and taken back to their owners. This affected all blacks (even freed slaves), because the only thing that the government looked for was rather someone claimed to be their owner (“Digital History”).
