As the title character in Gary Soto’s short story “Born Worker”, José only decides to go into business with his cousin Arnie because their partnership dynamic gives him authority over Arnie, beyond his financially insecure circumstances. During contemplating whether the business split is fair, José realizes Arnie would do what he disliked in the business arrangement, involving “[going] door-to-door...asking for work” (Soto 2).
