This is not how my life is suppose to turn out.” – Gayle Forman, If I Stay In the book titled If I Stay written by Gayle Forman the story of Mia Hall is described. Mia Hall was a teenager who got in a car crash that killed her immediate family, but not her. The book illustrates Mia’s struggle to decide to stay alive surrounded by her friends and be raised by her grandparents or to die. Throughout the book, how Mia feels neglect is illustrated. Feeling neglected or left behind is a common malady for those who survive fatal accidents.

Mia is influenced by the theme because she must decide to continue this feeling of being neglected or to die. Mia is effected by her neglect the whole book. While she would still have her grandparents and many friends, it is only imaginable how hard it would be to live without your immediate family. In If I Stay, there are frequent flashback to things that have happened in her past, many having to do with her family. She reflects on how they were such a big part of her life and how hard it would be to live without them. Mia debates living and dying despite her neglect. For example, in the book Mia says “I realize now that dying is easy. Living is hard.” (Forman) This exemplifies her feeling of neglect because she believes that living with being neglected would be harder than dying. She recognizes how difficult it would be to live without her family. Neglect was obviously something that Mia felt deeply since she was considering dying so she wouldn’t have to face
