The reasoning behind this is because the term gender dysphoria implies that the individual must be distressed by their bodies appearance (American Psychological Association). Not everyone who falls under the label transgender has a gender or they are genderfluid (someone who switches between genders)(Planned Parenthood). The idea that people need to have gender dysphoria is excluding to people who do not identify with any gender or whose gender fluxuates between genders and are content with the way their bodies look. Now, just because they do not need gender dysphoria for their identity to be under the transgender term does not mean that some of them do not experience gender dysphoria. They feel as though they will always be depressed and alone because of the gender dysphoria (Morris, Heather). Gender dysphoria can affect anyone with a sex and a gender that doesn’t line up but gender dysphoria does not have to be present for someone to be part of the transgender community. Whether you need gender dysphoria to be trans is not the only thing that has causes distress and tears of community within the trans community that deals with gender dysphoria.
The idea that people who experience gender dysphoria should be in a separate community than other trans people who do not experience gender dysphoria is quite literally ripping the community apart. The idea to separate based on an illness that almost never can be healed is toxic to any community because it segregates people based on a illness that takes time to heal if it does heal. An individual that does heal will most likely be shunned by both sides. The trans community is still fighting for rights and safety when, it attacks itself , it will make the community more likely to fall much like Rome did (Andrews, Evan).
