The first role model that young girls have are their mothers. They strive to be exactly like their mother in every way possible. In Everyday Use by Alice Walker, the roles were reversed. Mrs. Johnson, better known as Mama, wanted to be like her eldest daughter, Dee. She admired her every move, and even tried to please her more than she tried for her other daughter Maggie. Whenever Dee comes around, Mama feels uncomfortable and detached from her. For this reason, Mama longs for a better relationship with Dee.
