Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas, gender plays a large role. Throughout the memoir, Dumas mentions the role of women in America versus the role of women back home in Iran. Dumas' passion regarding gender roles is frequently presented to the reader. Initially, genre roles are discussed due to her mother's failure to identify Iran on a map. Dumas states that her mother didn't have much of an education because in her generation, "a girl's sole purpose in life was to find a husband ... an education ranked far below more desirable attributes such as the ability to serve tea or prepare baklava" (Dumas 5). We are shown the effect of gender roles and their capability of determining a woman's education and independence. Dumas discusses one of her distant cousin's grandmother Sedigeh. Dumas explains that her father always considered this occurrence to be "a huge justice" (Dumas 100). Sedigeh, a very bright woman, was taken out of school once she passed sixth grade and was married off into another family. Sedigeh would have had a bright future ahead of her had she not been limited to her gender. Due to Dumas' father understanding and progressive attitude, he consistently encouraged Firoozeh to attend university and become something greater than herself.
