At the start of the Civil War General Winfield Scott developed the Anaconda Plan. This was Union’s strategic plan to defeat the Confederacy by blockading southern ports and controlling the Mississippi river. The goal was to isolate the south from the outside world. It was developed after the attack on Fort Sumter; the idea was to end the war with minimal casualties for both sides. General Scott had to persuade fellow Union commanders that this was the best strategy. They did not have the patience to wait it out; instead they wanted to crush the rebellion as soon as possible to restore peace.
