Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a mental illness that affects 3 million people each year. It is categorized as anxiety that hinders your everyday life. It’s more than just normal anxiety people experience daily. Anticipating disaster, worrying about health, money, family, and school. Even thinking about going through the day causes anxiety. The demographics of people with GAD are separated by gender, age, and race. The exact cause of Generalized Anxiety Disorder is unknown, however it’s believed that environment influence, genetics, and brain chemistry play a role in Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The mental symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder is the constant worry that disaster will happen, sense of terror, constantly worried, and stressed over nothing. Plenty of people experience these symptoms. In spite of these symptoms being common, it becomes Generalized Anxiety Disorder when these irrational fears prohibit you from doing everyday activities. It’s almost impossible to have a relaxing day when someone has Generalized Anxiety Disorder, there will always be intrusive thoughts that something will take a turn for the worst. Mostly, Caucasian females are the main victim of Generalized Anxiety disorder. This may be true, but generally, females tend to be overdiagnosed with anxiety disorders. Men are underdiagnosed because most men’s masculinity is fragile so they do not seek out treatment, or the psychiatrist subconsciously believes that it is “unmanly” to have anxiety.
