Genetic disorders are caused by an abnormality it can range from a small mutation to a whole chromosome mutation. There are 6,000 know genetic disorder, about every 1 out of 200 babies are diagnosed with a genetic disorder. About every person carries 5 to 10 genetic disorders, serious or not. Back in the olden days people used to think if someone had a genetic disorder, they would be considered a witch. But now we know a genetic disorder is passed down from generation to generation and they are found in chromosomes. The name of my disorder is called Lou Gehrig’s Disease also know as (ALS) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It is named Lou Gehrig’s disease because he was the first person to get diagnosed with it. Another name it is called by is ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The first person to discover this disease was a lady name Jean-Martin Charcot in 1869. Close to 5,000 people diagnosed with it each year.
Nobody knows how a person get’s it but it can happen to any adult at anytime of their life. They think it is linked to a “familial” meaning family. It is a chromosomal error because the 23rd paired chromosome is usually a sex chromosome and it differs from male to female. The meaning of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a= absence of, myo= muscle, trophic= nourishment, lateral= side (of spine), sclerosis= hardening or scarring. It is an autosomal dominate.
