President Abraham Lincoln read his speech at the end of the civil war when the nation was split into the North and the South. Both sides were mad with each other. President Lincoln addresses the United States as one nation intending to heal its brokenness. Lincoln’s purpose of his speech is to reunite the Nation, he uses rhetorical strategies such as diction, tone, and allusion to fulfill his purpose in doing so.
President Lincoln continually uses diction throughout his speech by using phrases such as, “saving the Union without war”, “peace”, and “bind up”. President Lincoln uses phrases like “saving the Union without war”, “peace”, and “bind up” because this is what he wants to see within the nation. “Bind up” is used to express the healing that needs to be done to the nation and the people. The Slaves and the Americans went through a lot throughout this time period and Abraham addresses it as he wants the nation and everything in it to be healed from its brokenness due to the beliefs of slavery and slavery happening. These phrases will help heal the nation because in most cases people want peace and a civilized Nation.
