A pattern that exists within the modern society is the increased polarization of various groups of individuals who feel strongly connected to a certain political or social ideal. This division has lead to an increased hostility between people, based on the perception of another person’s opinion. Large groups of people sharing the same viewpoints are now able to connect with one another through various social media platforms and discuss what their beliefs on current and future policies in our government. Strong proponents of certain beliefs have always existed but the greater public expression has spread with the creation of new technology. This growing movement of strongly held political beliefs can be correlated with the increasing ease of access that people have to the internet. The ability to converse with like minded people has allowed a mindset of groupthink to occur in which only certain opinions are being presented. In order to connect with a larger number of people, both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have used Twitter extensively to express their views on almost every pertinent event. These messages are public and can be shared among users extremely easily, allowing people to selectively spread certain ideas. These ideas can then circulate between a group of likeminded people, with various criticisms being given and a large number of responses that begin to center around a particular theme of negativity towards a certain political candidate. Twitter furthers the pre-established notions of every user by tailoring their experience to match with their particular interests.
