Throughout the past, there has always been natural disasters and some are larger than others. Without a doubt, big or small, a disaster always effects people in a negative way. There will always be natural disasters, even thousands of years in the future and Leonard Pitts voices this issue perfectly. On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit with devastating earthquake that leave the people of Haiti in utter shambles. Leonard’s piece on this event does not solely focus on the disaster, but instead, a larger picture. He is able to connect what has happened to the Haitian people to time, past and present. In Leonard’s article, Sometimes the Earth is Cruel, he broadens our horizons to accepting that natural disasters by describing the Haitian people’s actions, the connections between the Haitian people and nature, and how the Haitian people dealt with their tragedy. On January 10, 2010, Haiti woke up to this day seeing their capital destroyed by a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake. This destructive event left thousands homeless, injured, or dead. It became clear that Haiti left the disaster in rubbles because the land was now left in poverty. Thus, making the natural disaster ten times worse because the country was in no condition to handle a major natural disaster. Haiti, as a country, were the absolute worst victims of a colossus tragedy of this magnitude. This country had a history of corrupt political leaders causing instability and colonial instability. To make matters even worse, these disasters were amplified because of human greed, corruption, and economic predation. If the country was led and handled better Haiti would not have been in a terribly helpless
