Hard Times At Douglass High Analysis

As an inner city school located in Baltimore where people live in low income areas where they face hard times in their everyday lives. This is a common trend where it even affects their education. When “Hard Times at Douglass High” was being filmed, only three out of 300-400 incoming freshmen at the school for the academic year tested at grade level in reading. This means that most of these children are reading grade levels lower than what they are in, some are at a fourth and fifth grade reading level. Due to the great learning curve, students in ninth grade are at highest disadvantage. This puts a lot of stress more stress on the teachers who are already under a great deal due to risk of being fired that is being held over them at all times. By the end of the year, about 50% of the students will drop out of school. If the school fails to score better on the state exam the state will be forced to step in and take over this means that all the current teachers who are there would be fired which would lead to more problems such as unemployment.

In almost every school like Douglass they all face the same problems like low income areas, where children are set up for failure, kids not wanting to go to class because they do not care, uncertified teacher teaching because they need people who can try to help in anyway possible. Its also hard for these teachers as well because they are trying their best to teach these kids but they just don't
