Before people start interacting with one another they will usually greet each other. It's a form of respect they show as well as a way to start a conversation. When people realize each other and don't say nothing to greet one another afterwards they will see it as a way of disrespect because they would be ignoring themselves and showing disrespectful manners.

Hello falls as a rhetorical appeal that can lead to ethos. It convincing characters that they don't have a problem and if they were to ignore one another afterwards it's persuading them that a problem may be occoring. Saying "hello" to character who you realize of is the most logic thing to discharge.
