Summary
Although terrorism has narrowly lost its edge as our nation’s greatest threat, extremist groups, like Hezbollah, are of increasing concern to our national security. Hezbollah is one of many terrorist groups that have sprouted up due to sectarian conflict in the Middle East. Although not the main player in the region, Hezbollah has involved itself in a great deal of conflicts with nations of great interest to us. The group draws majority of its backing from strong anti-Semitist allies like Iran and Syria, due to this Hezbollah is often viewed as a proxy of Iran, tasked with spreading and protecting the Shiite beliefs. The only true link connecting these groups is their common desire to obliterate the Jewish nation.

Hezbollah traces its foundations back to the early 1980’s during the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. During this time, the Shiite leadership within Lebanon split along two fundamental lines in response to the Israeli occupation of south-Lebanon in 1982. The leaders who favored a militant response and the creation of an Iranian-style republic broke away from the leading Amal movement and created the Al Amal al Islamiya movement. The Al Amal organization garnered support from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards through financial assets, weapon supplies and combat training. The group quickly became the forefront organization for Shiite followers in the region.
