Hillcrest, a vibrant urban neighborhood in San Diego, with bustling streets, popular shops and restaurants, is a community that has become very desirable, to live, work and play. Hillcrest is also a very diverse location; from it’s residents to the homes and business that are throughout the area. When considering a development project on the block between University and Robinson and 5th and 6th Avenues, the question becomes how to design a community with a set of multi use buildings that are going to implement growth and unity in the area. Taking the approach of designing spaces that primarily have one focused use and turning it into a multifunctional space. Hillcrest has many different styles of architecture and in keeping with that eclectic style; these buildings have to seemingly mesh in with the surrounding architecture. During the initial development phase, careful consideration will be had in containing and preserving as much of the current buildings that occupy the space. Current spaces will be rehabbed and incorporated within the new buildings. These new buildings would be constructed in similar, city approved colors and constructed in a contemporary design, which will blend cohesively with the surrounding architecture. Buildings will not be any taller than 120 feet, which will keep the skyline clean and unobstructed and most importantly follow city building codes. The natural environment is also an important factor and not one to be overlooked. Existing green-space and landscape will be taken into heavily consideration and in most cases be preserved or enhanced by the addition of shrubbery, trees meeting areas and full parks throughout the proposed
