The advancement of life on earth would have been entirely different and the conditions for human development as it is currently might not have existed without the honeybees. Honeybees are one of the most hardworking and important creatures which contributes to to our ecosystem and food chain. But unfortunately the number of honeybees in North America has been decreasing rapidly over the past recent years. This phenomenon of disappearance of the honeybees from their hives is termed as “Colony Collapse Disorder” (CCD). It is causing an increasing alarm all over the globe because of the significant role played by the honeybees in pollination.

One of them is the use of chemical pesticides and insecticides on the crops, which honeybees ingest during their daily pollination rounds. These insecticides attack the nervous system of the honeybees which results to their death. Nutritional deficiencies is also causing the honeybees to disappear. Beekeepers keeps hives near fields of same crops which results to malnutrition of the bees as they are getting only one type of nectar. Bees also need to feed on high-quality pollen in fall in order to produce long-lived bees that can survive winter. [2] Poor nutrition suppresses immune function, making the bees much more defenseless to toxins from pesticides, viruses, fungi, or a combination of factors that ultimately harms them. Parasites, such as harmful mites are believed to be causing CCD by reducing the immunity of the honeybees to diseases by pesticides, viruses, fungi. The parasitic mites, “Varroa destructor and Acarapis woodi, began to cause infestation since the late 1980’s” [3] which affects the immune system of the honeybees. Bee populations may also be vulnerable to other factors, such as electromagnetic radiation emitted from cell phones and wireless communication towers. Researchers have found that the radiation emitted from a cellphone placed nearby a hive causes the bees to avoid it, a study conducted at Landau University, Germany.
