Known for conquering many territories, Alexander expanded his empire but allowed his subjects to continue practicing their previous country’s culture and religion. Alexander displayed qualities of ambition and respect through his many victories, the way he treats his enemies and new citizens, and strategy on the battlefield. Even before his reign as king, Alexander displayed his ambition with his skill and intellect through his battles and his caution. Alexander eliminated potential rivals to his throne such as his sister and Cleopatra as well as individuals thought to be traitors and actual ones. His mother assisted him in murdering his sister and driving Cleopatra to suicide. All of these factors ensured his right to the throne. Once he became king, he started reissuing treaties with Greek city-states that belonged to the Corinthian League to gain military support to gain control of Persia. The victory of the Battle of Issus allowed Alexander to expand his empire greatly as well as added more funds for his army. It also showed his citizens that despite his power he respects and treats his new citizens no different from his original ones. The Battle of Gaugamela was crucial because it showed Alexander’s military prowess. He created a scouting party that encountered a small advance party that they captured. The captured told Alexander the amount of troops, traps and obstacles on the field; his opponent’s forces greatly outnumbered Alexander’s own army.
