s one of the founding fathers of the United States of America as well as one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence that declared the Thirteen Colonies apart from Great Britain in 1776. As if that is not enough for one man, Franklin is also very famous for his experiments into electricity. You have probably heard of the experiment when Franklin attached a key to a kite and had his son William flying the kite it out of a window during a thunderstorm. If you have insurance, you can thank Franklin as well. In 1752, Franklin started the Philadelphia Contributionship, the first mutual fire and fire damage insurance company. It is for these reasons and countless others that Ben is considered one of the most important men in the founding of the United States. He was even chosen to be an agent for the thirteen colonies to represent the thirteen colonies in the British Parliament. If not for his constant efforts and many contributions to the assembly and the thirteen colonies, we might not be a free country. Franklin was the 15th of 17 children of Josiah Franklin a soap and candle maker in Boston. As he grew, Franklin liked helping his father in the candle making shop. At the age of twelve, Ben started an apprenticeship with his older brother James, a printer. Ben quickly became fond of the art, his quick mind and strong body were well suited in the trade.
