Christopher Columbus was born in 1479 in Genoa, Italy. His father was Dominico Columbus and his mother was Susanna Columbus. He had 1 sister and 3 brothers. His siblings were named Bartholomew, Giacomo and Giovanni. His sister was named Bianchinetta. Columbus sailed four times across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain trying to find America. He died at age 55 on May 20th, 1506. In 1504, after his last voyage was to Spain, Columbus was 53 years old and was very sick. His eyes were in bad health and sometimes made it impossible for him to read and he suffered a lot of pain. Christopher Columbus was christian although he didn’t travel to spread the word, he travelled so he could find a fast route to India in order to trade spices. Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 although he was meaning to find Asia, in particular, India. When Columbus arrived at the Americas, he gave the natives cheap gifts and bells but then he claimed the Island for Spain. When left the Americas, he brought home gold, new foods and new knowledge. However, they brought misery to many Native Americans. Columbus and his team took their land. Many Native Americans were killed in wars with the Europeans. The Europeans also bought diseases over and many Americans died because of the diseases. I think that it was very brave of Christopher Columbus to try to find new ways to reach Asia and India even though people laughed at his ideas. I think that when he re-discovered - because thousands of years before others had discovered America - the Americas he became cocky and felt powerful. Overall I think that Columbus discovering America was a great achievement but when power started to get to his head and he started treating Native Americans as slaves, he became less
