The egyptians built pyramids to protect their deceased pharaohs, and to store items that were necessary for the pharaoh to live in the afterlife. They wanted to protect them, because they believed that pharaohs were the connection between the gods and the Egyptian people. Since they are the connection between god and people, they wanted to keep the pharaohs intact as they went on into their afterlife. Pharaohs believed that once they died, they represented Osiris (god of the dead) and when a new pharaoh replaced the old one, they became Horus (god of the sun).
