In the early 1900's there were a few significant activists. Some of them were Jacob Riis, Upton Sinclair, and Alice Paul. These three people used different tactics to try to help the people of the United States. Jacob Riis wrote a book based on the living conditions of New York for the immigrants, Upton Sinclair wrote a book as well but the people in the book were not real but the information about the meat making companies were factual, and Alice Paul protested and fought for women's rights. jacob Riis got his point across very strongly. He wrote a book vividly describing the living conditions of the immigrants neighborhoods, and when people read it they were horrified. Theodore Roosevelt had read the book Jacob Riis had published, and Roosevelt had gone down to help Jacob get attention on the huge subject that had to be fixed. Together they got attention and the help the immigrants needed and not to soon after that is when there was a law passed that contained certain things that the immigrant neighborhoods had to contain so they could live better than they were. …show more content…
Upton Sinclair went and researched the meat factories and noticed that they do not make the food very well, and they do not treat the staff very well either. There was extra things being added in the food, the people would turn already dead animals into meat for people to eat (which is not sanitary at all). The job also treated the workers like complete trash as well. Someone would get hurt and would be not able to work, and no matter the job hundreds of people would try to get his job. The workers were treated with disrespect and they did not get paid very well either. But Upton Sinclair wrote a book that was a real eye opener for people, and soon after the book came out they passed laws about what was in the food the people were going to eat.
