How Did Kafka Metamorphosis Change

In The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa undergoes a transformation into an inhuman creature in order for his family to undergo a transformation of their own. Gregor’s only wish in life is to supply for and protect his family. We know this because he only works as a traveling salesman to pay off his family’s debt to his boss, he is the only one in his family that has a job, and he saves up to send his sister to a music school. Due to his metamorphosis, Gregor’s family becomes self sufficient, they grow closer, and Gregor’s sister matures into a young woman. In the beginning of the story, Gregor is the only one in his family with a job. His family is so dependent on him that, when he wakes up, he believes “that the logical recourse [is] to risk everything in the mere hope of freeing himself from the bed” (10). His only concern is that he is late for work, not that he has turned into “monstrous vermin” (7). She begins the story as a young and frail child. She is so terrified by the prospect of Gregor being sick, that she “began sobbing” (13) when she thinks he might be sick. After the family finds out about Gregor’s transformation, neither of the parents want to take care of him, and Grete has to take on the responsibility of looking after him. In addition to her new task of taking care of her brother, she is also forced to get a job as a salesgirl to help provide for the family. As Grete becomes more liable she grows stronger and more mature. As Gregor gets weaker and closer to death, Grete gets stronger and more confident.
