Louis Zamperini, or more commonly known as Louie, possessed many skills and characteristics during his youth that labeled him as a troublemaker and a rebel. It even earned him a nickname, the “one-boy insurgency”. However, his expertise at stealing and causing trouble helped him through the calamities of the war, from the days on the raft to living through the POW camps and the ruthless acts of war criminal Mutsuhiro Watanabe, or “the Bird”. One quality of Louie is his defiance. Since he was young, he showed that he did not comply with the rules set before him. One statement made by Hillenbrand was, “From the moment he could walk, Louie couldn’t bear to be corralled.” This statement shows how he did not like being controlled by others. This helped him survive through the war because it sparked the hatred of being confined in him and helped him power through the harsh living conditions of the camp. …show more content…
During his youth, he had found many ways to extract money from adults and steal without getting caught. One method was to stage fights in front of strangers to make them believe they are really fighting. “Discovering, while scuffling with an enemy at a circus, that adults would give quarters to fighting kids to pacify them, Louie declared a truce with the enemy and they cruised around staging brawls before strangers.” Another clever act Louie performed for money was rigging paper behind the payphone so he can collect the cash from the users, “In the lobby of the Torrance theater, Louie stopped up the pay telephone’s coin slot with toilet paper. He returned regularly to feed wire behind the coins stacked up inside, hook the paper, and fill his palms with change.” This quality would help him later in life by blessing him with the ability to come up with solutions, lies, and stories on the spot that might save his life, for example in an
