Many of the settlers would move themselves and their families to the west in the hopes of finding land to be their own and claiming it without care. Once arriving and in the absence of any formal government the American people that would settle the western territories were free to govern themselves how they pleased until the proper institution of government . This led to a self-determination of whether a territory would be a slave territory, which led to the spread of slavery to new territories and ultimately laid the foundation for a conflict that would take decades to resolve. The War of 1812 and the conflict over the Oregon territory would affect international relations with the British. The Mexican-American War, over the annexation of Texas, would lead the conflict with Mexico. Manifest Destiny did not just effect the relationships the American people would have with those located within their border, or the borders of the continent they wished to control. Prior to the Civil War these would be the two major instances of the effect Manifest Destiny would have on international relations, but we have seen the effects as recent as the early 21st century. In the late 19th century the United States would begin to expand outside the borders of the mainland North American continent and claim such places as Hawaii and other Pacific Islands.
