Reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War. This is the time period which the United States began to build and bring unity to the the north and south politically and economically. Reconstruction also took place to rebuild the south completely both physically and economically. Ideals were also was in the process of reconstruction for example, the idea that everyone no matter what race was seen as an equal. Reconstruction did not achieve its goals as easily and most likely drove the north and south politically farther apart. Radicals passed the Wade-Davis Bill, Lincoln created the Ten Percent Plan, and Johnson created a plan called the Presidential Reconstruction. But Johnson claimed that reconstruction was faultless and there was nothing else that needed to be done. Many believed that in contrast the south still had a lot of reconstruction that needed to be completed.
As Union soldiers occupied huge areas of the South Abraham Lincoln began planning for the reconstruction. President Lincoln's objective was to quickly restore unity in the Nation. On December 18, 1863 he proposed his plan for reconstruction. Which is also know as the "Ten Percent Plan" . This plan stated that a state could form a civilian government and apply for readmission to the Union after ten percent of its registered voters had sworn allegiance to the federal government. Lincoln also proposed that the highest-ranking Confederate leaders would not be prosecuted for treason at the end of the war. The new plan's main objective was that slavery would be prohibited in all the states new constitutions.
