World War II was a time when may people were afraid and most had to ration or get a job working for the military. This started Robert Oppenheimer's legacy. Robert Oppenheimer is an influential and intelligent person. He is mostly known for the creation of the atom bomb but he did do more than that. He helped influence people to think about the future Robert Oppenheimer was born on April 22, 1904, in New York City. He was the child of a rich German immigrant father. They were Jewish but did not accept it entirely. He had a brother named Frank Oppenheimer grew up to be as great as his brother. He went to private school for most of his life. He went to Harvard for his undergraduate degree. After he went to Harvard, Oppenheimer went to the University of Cambridge to start his research on the atom. His job was to teach people about theoretical physics. He was a fast-talking lecturer, but then was promoted to become a full time professor. He became widely known for his teaching skills and his studies in Ernest Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. When World War II started, Oppenheimer started to be more active in political issues. The Manhattan Project, which was to figure out how to make the atom bomb was started with Oppenheimer who was recruited to lead with Albert Einstein. They were forced to work at Los Alamos, New Mexico. When they work there they weren’t allowed to talk about anywhere and if they had to they could only say a little bit about it. He just figured out that he made one of the world’s most terrifying weapons. A atom bomb is made with uranium-235. It is a highly unstable element. This was hard to find because it usually is mixed with uranium-238 and they need somewhat the pure isotope of uranium-235. This by itself was a trivial task but by the end they were able to get a basketball sized lump of almost pure
