The Romans were the first of many to invade Belgium. Its history is comprised of different occupations taking rule over the country. In fact, the country’s name even links back to these times – Julius Caesar mentioned the Belgae during his conquest of Gaul, and when the nation needed a name following independence, the word ‘Belgium’ was born. The year is 1831, dated July 21st. Belgium is liberated with independence from other nations! Finally the true history of belgium comes into play. King Léopold I was the great man to grant Independence to the nation. Léopold II (r 1865–1909) came to the throne on his father’s death. He was committed to transforming the tiny country into a strong nation, both through colonial conquests and national development.
