A lot occurred once Stalin had died and the Cold War had passed. After 1945, Western Europe laid in ruins, followed by a time of recovery and reconstruction. Post Cold War, there were over 30 million displaced persons in Europe. Many countries continued to aid and Great Britain helped with the creation of the Bretton Woods system including an International Monetary Fund. These were created in order to mandate a new form of currency in the quickly diminishing Europe. In addition though, to avoid the high rising and intense nationalistic feelings, Great Britain worked towards a system of free trade. Also, Great Britain acknowledged the need for state management of a capitalist economy. For example, now, the new Labour government signaled its commitment to full employment and the social welfare state by following the wartime Beveridge Report of 1942. Resulting from this, its political power was also decreasing. The new Labour government did not give much importance to the British Empire comprised of colonies. The loosened grip, along with the new mindset of lower countries after the Cold War to fight for their independence, really forced Great Britain to give up many of the colonies and investments it had held on to for so long. Just a few examples were with Israel and Palestine, where Palestine proposed a partition to the formation of Israel. Another was with India and Pakistan where Britain’s presence only disrupted the flow of things.
