The Silk Road was a network of trade routes. The routes stretched from the Korean peninsula and Japan to the Mediterranean Sea. It also connected Asia and Europe. The Silk Road began during the beginning of the Han Dynasty (207 BCE – 220 CE). During the Han Dynasty, trade routes were expanded and thus encouraged China to extend the Great Wall of China to protect the trade routes. Trade routes opened long-distance political and economic relations between civilizations. Therefore, making an impact on the development of civilizations such as China, Korea, Japan, Persia, and Europe. It was also a very important time in history for me. It’s hard to believe a tragic outburst such as the bubonic plague could have affected my future specifically, but it did. The Black Death affected my life immensely given that I am a Type 1 Diabetic. Without the Bubonic Plague and the Silk Road spreading it, modern day would be years behind in medical knowledge. This means that things like insulin, insulin pumps, CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitor), and the steps to a cure could be way behind in advancements, or maybe not even exist. This is so important because without insulin, pumps, or CGMs I possibly could have been dead before even turning six. The medical advancements we have made over the years, not just for Type 1 Diabetics, are extremely significant and have saved many lives. Not having access to insulin when your pancreas stopped creating it, is a nightmare. I, and a lot of others, would maybe last a couple days without it. Many others would be dead too if it weren't for these significant events in history. The medical advancements we have made because of the existence of the Silk Road and being able to trade and gain knowledge from other civilizations is truly
