How Did Vimy Ridge Shaped Canada

The Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War 1 was one of the most significant events in Canada’s political development. Not only was it the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together but also Canadian troops were able to gain control of the ridge and beat one of the most powerful armies in the world. Even before the battle started French and British troops had tried to gain control of the ridge but failed. Due to this victory, Canadians troops gained respect from nations around the world. Furthermore, as a result of Canada's tremendous contribution during the war, they were given a seat in the League of Nations and the Paris Peace Conference. This was the first time that Canada was able to participate in an international conference as an independent country instead of a dominion of Britain. Indeed, this was the start of the fight for Canadian autonomy. Additionally, Vimy Ridge gave Canadians across the nation a new sense of identity. Before these parties were formed Canada only had two major parties the Liberal’s and the Conservatives. Many Canadians did not like the platform of these traditional parties. They wanted social and economic reforms, so they began supporting these new parties who promised to bring these changes.
