In this assignment, the following topics will be discussed: The conscription crisis, the overall impact of WW1 on Canada’s Identity and the "Roaring Twenties". The Conscription Crisis was caused by multiple things, the principle reason was the fact that once Prime Minister Borden was re-elected in 1917, he went back on a promise he made during his campaign. He had formerly promised that there would be no Conscription laws. Understandably, when he went back on his word, those who opposed the law were outraged. A large percentage of the people who opposed the conscription laws were French-Canadians. They didn’t feel any affiliation towards the British or the French, overseas. The fighting overseas helped Canada to realize they were capable of being independent, not having to go to the British or any other countries as much. It helped Canada "develop" and be seen as its own sovereign country by others. The British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, when he gave the right to Canada to sign the Treaty of Versailles independently, and not as part of the British Empire. While a high number of men were fighting overseas, there was an increase of job openings because of the lack of men at home. Everything from working in munitions factories, to replacing men in banks, offices, and on farms. The Government recognized they could not support the Canadian soldiers overseas, without hiring more people at home to manufacture the supplies needed to fight. Canada decided they needed to hire women, paying them 52.8% of what men earned at the time. Women realized they deserved better, and started a movement to get better lives for themselves. At home, Canadians began to learn to respect women, letting them have better jobs, getting higher salaries, going to university (35% of graduates were women).
