The zoo is a wondrous place where you go to see a distant relative. Yes that may sound weird but the animals there may be related to you but definitely not close so don’t panic. The animals have evolved over time to become very far distant relatives. Species do change over time and we can see this through the competition, adaptations, and environment changes. We can also see this throughout history with many fossils and common traits among organisms. The competition between organisms forces them to adapt to their environment and this occurs throughout history, so they all tie together.

Competition allows only the most fit species to pass on their genes. In the bird beak lab, the chopsticks were unsuccessful at picking up seeds while the tweezers were successful and would survive over the chopsticks and pass on their traits. Competing with other organisms for a desired food or object can cause the less fit to die off and not pass on genes. During the bunny lab, another example, the long teeth bunnies survived longer over the short teeth bunnies. This occured due to the competition of food, which the long teeth bunnies were able to chew more efficiently, making them survive.

For example in the stickleback fish lab, they lost their spines to survive in the less predatory waters. This allowed them to lose the armour and become faster to survive in the lakes. During the bunny lab, the bunnies mutated and then adapted to become fit in the environment they live in. The bunnies adapted to the color, food, or predators which allowed them to survive in the environment rather than die off. The NOVA lab demonstrated that animals are closely related through a common ancestor but have adapted to become different and survive. Organisms with vertebrate have ancestral ties, but adapted to survive in the different environments so they grew to be different. Adaptations occur to benefit organisms in their
