Edgar Allan Poe Essay Edgar Allan Poe is a widely known poet of a distinct style. Poe’s emotional responses for his poems and stories are horror and sadness, he elicits in his readers. Edgar Allan Poe’s style is characterized by his use of sound, irony, and repeated elements. Poe uses sound imagery in his poem “ The Raven.” For example, his uses the “ore” sound to describe “Nevermore” and “Lenore.” The emotional effect in “The Raven” is sorrow for the death of a loved one. The “ore” sound helps to create this emotional effect because Poe thought the “ore” sound was the saddest sound in the English language. It also describes Lenore, the only woman the narrator loved. It is also included in the only line that the Raven has, “Nevermore.” In Poe’s story “Tell-Tale Heart” he uses irony. For example, when the old man is murdered by someone he trusted. This type of irony is called situational irony when you expect one thing but the opposite happens instead. The emotional effect in this story is horror of premeditated death. This irony helps to create this emotional effect because the narrator of this story stalks this old man waiting for the right moment to kill him; it also gets you to start thinking about who you can really trust. …show more content…
For example, the narrator’s love was a beautiful young woman, who probably died of pneumonia because the angels were jealous. The emotional effect of this poem is sorrow for the death of a loved one. The repeated element of beautiful young women dying helps to create the emotion effect, because it is always sad when someone dies, but when a loved one dies your heart is just shattered into a million pieces. You always blame yourself even if it isn’t your fault, but your world is just turned upside down. They were everything to you and you just lost them forever, and they will never know how much you truly care about
