Throughout the story, the boy must decide between Sheila and the bass. One choice in his decision could be the bass. One reason why he would pick the bass is because it is his greatest passion. He spends most of his time fishing and practicing to catch the perfect fish. One quote to support this idea is “I was back in our driveway practicing casts, and when I wasn’t practicing casts, I was tying the line to Tosca, our springer spaniel, to test the reel’s drag and when I wasn’t doing any of those things, I was fishing the river for bass” (Wetherell 2). One reason why he would choose Sheila is because he knows her well and finds her attractive. To the boy Sheila Mant is indescribably gorgeous and knows exactly how she is feeling by her every move. He studies the way she lays down and the way she has her hand is how she is feeling. He is in love with the way she talks and the way she simply looks. Another reason is that he tries to impress her with his swimming. He practices nonstop to try to impress Sheila and to get her attention by the way he is a miraculous swimmer. He does his best tucks until the sun goes down or until she is out of his sights. The last reason for him to pick Sheila is that he hides his passion for her. Sheila expressed to the boy that she thinks that fishing is dumb and finds it boring. Knowing this and still wanting to keep the girl, he finally asked out on a date, he tries to keep both. He had one night with the girl and he could not give this up. He did his best to hide his fishing reel and even thought about tipping the whole canoe over just so he could still keep his dream from the girl.
