Loneliness is the basic part of human life. In the novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, George Milton and Lennie Small are laborers in California who travel together in hopes to one day own a little farm of their own.They desire the land,roots,and a place to call home.They stick together because they have known each other since they were kids.When Lennie’s aunt died, George looked after him treating him like his very own child for the same reason he is mentally handicapped.Steinbeck presents loneliness throughout the novel and characters.Steinbeck’s idea for this novel came from a poem about Adam and Eve’s fall which lead mankind to be alone and walk the earth as a lonely being. Such as Lennie his character is physically strong but that is the only power he possesses. Since he has a mentally handicapped way of a child he knows what it is to be good and doesn’t want to be bad. George is also powerless in making sure Lennie is good because Curley’s wife is a huge distraction to Lennie. He is not around twenty four seven to keep an eye on him.Each of the characters represents a kind of person in American society. These characters represent what powerless is because Candy is old and physically handicapped , Crooks is discriminated because of his race and Curley’s wife because of gender.Another type of powerlessness is economically as the men are trying to reach their six hundred dollars to buy their land they have to work for six months. Crooks says in quote "I seen guys nearly crazy with loneliness for land, but every time a whorehouse or a blackjack game took what it takes." The quote states that humans want to spend their money right away instead of saving for tomorrow. Many times that happens which means having dreams and not thinking of loneliness helps for the future to get to where you want to
