William Goldings and Destruction of Order Imagine trying to survive with no adults. William Golding talks about a group of boys who get stuck on a island and try to survive. As they are their, there order starts fading and they start. becoming more savage. Golding uses the conch, fire and Ralph to emphasize the idea how the order starts declining. William Golding uses the conch shell to show how the boys use it to have order. The Conch is important in the whole story they use it to have order in the meetings. Its the beginning of Chapter 1 and “ Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds. “ A stone” No. A shell.” (Golding 15). That is what Ralph uses later to become chief of the boys and he will be the one to give them order. The conch is used throughout the book and it is one of the main things that gives them order. The boys stop listening to the coach and start speaking whenever. The reason why the fire needed order was so the fire wouldn't spread through the island and to have lookouts for and ships to send signals. In chapter 2 the boys are talking then Ralph argues “There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” (Golding 38) Fire is important so they can survive with so they can cook food and survive. The order is important is so the fires won’t get out of control. In chapter 11 Ralph is talking and addresses “Just an ordinary fire. You’d think we could do that, wouldn’t you? Just a smoke signal so we can be rescued. Are we savages or what?” (Golding 170) Ralph is getting mad and think the boys don't have order to do anything.
