Horton Hears a Who is a beloved children’s story written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, or more commonly known as Dr. Seuss. It tells the tale of Horton, an elephant, who is splashing around in the pool until he hears a noise from the speck floating by him. Horton believes that someone is living on the speck and places it on a clover to keep it safe. He later discovers that a whole community known as Whoville is living there and that they could be destroyed if Horton does not find a safe place for them to live. Horton decides to put the clover on the top of Mt. Nool, but has to make the journey across the jungle to reach his destination. The most important character in the story would be Horton the elephant. He is similar to Jesus in this story, because his job is to save the city of Whoville, just as Jesus came to save us from our sins. The city of Whoville would have been destroyed if it were not for Horton. This is similar to how humanity would have been destroyed if it were not for Jesus. The next most important character would be Ned McDodd, the mayor of Whoville. Ned McDodd is similar to the apostle Paul, because he is trying to warn the people about the danger that is present, but Whoville will not listen to him. Paul constantly tries to warn the people that they need to change, but many do not listen to him. The sour kangaroo in a very complicated character in the story. She is similar to the devil because she wants to destroy the speck that Horton has. This resembles how the devil wants to destroy humanity that God created. The kangaroo also tries to tell Horton that Whoville does not exist and “if you can’t see, hear, or touch something, it doesn’t exist.” This is similar to how the devil tries to tempt us and tell us that God does not exist because we can not see, hear, or touch him.
