Human Resource Case Analysis Employers are faced with making the decision between hiring employees or an independent contractor. There are advantages and disadvantages for independent contractors. The case the student presented was regarding a grant writer position at a non-profit organization. The non-profit organization focuses on providing food to local food pantries and soup kitchens. This mission is crucial to the local Palm Beach County since there are no other companies taking care of this need in the county. Since the company provides free of charge services to the soup kitchens and pantries, fundraising is crucial for the non-profit organization. For instance the employee will be contemplating the mission first hand; resulting in a writing that expresses the core of the mission with a heartfelt tone, placing a face to the statistics. One must feel the mission in order to express the feeling in the writing. With an independent contractor the experience might be different since they are experiencing the mission at a different level. Additionally, if an employee is compensated fairly and the company also provides a competitive benefit package, it is likely that the employee will have loyalty for the company. On the other hand, if the independent contractor is a seasoned writer and is passionate about philanthropy, it might work; however, it is extremely hard to find a grant writer with all those qualities.

Perhaps, showing a profit and loss statement will enable the fundraising department to see the actual return on investment. While the decision is in the hands of the fundraising department, it is crucial for the student to share the data. Sharing different points of view is part of teamwork, which is encouraged at the non-profit organization. “Business displays many examples of group decision-making. From the top of an organization (Board of Directors) to the organization of teams among the workforce, groups play an important role in the corporate structure” (Kosher, 2007, p.1).
