Iago, Friend or Foe? "But those with an evil heart seem to have a talent for destroying anything beautiful which is about to bloom,” once said by Cynthia Rylant towards those with a tainted dark heart seem to ruin those with a beautiful kind soul. Metaphorically this quote can refer to the play Othello, the kind souled flower about to bloom can represent Othello himself having great things coming for him with his recent job promotion and his perfect wife, deceived by his lieutenant Iago with a hidden evil heart of jealousy Iago destroyed the marriage. In Othello by William Shakespeare the play is about a happily wedded couple; Othello and Desdemona had a strong loving marriage but soon their marriage was poisoned by Iago for his conniving lies about Desdemona’s infidelity just for the satisfaction of his revenge. …show more content…

Iago is sexist and has no morals or respect for women while he creates imagery that women are only unfaithful thieves, lazy, talkative, annoying leeches and only want men as sexual toys. Due to his views on women it would explain why Iago’s marriage with Emilia is such a failure, “Ere I would say I would drown myself for the love of a guinea hen; I would change my humanity with a baboon,” (I.III.310). Iago places himself at the top of the pedestal as he exclaims that he would never give up his life or devotion for a women for he wouldn’t change his humanity with a ‘baboon’ in other words, metaphorically a monkey is the term he nicknames women in his world he believes that no man with a brain or a right mind would chase after a women as superior.
