In the story, “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator attempts to take his paralyzed, disabled brother the “ideal brother”. In the beginning of the story, the narrator talks about what the ideal brother looks like to him. When Doodle is born, the narrator realizes he does not have the ideal brother. At the end of the story, the narrator and Doodle are on their way back home when the narrator leaves Doodle to get home and returns to his dead brother. The death of Doodle should be blamed on the narrator. The narrator let his emotions, his idea of the ideal brother, and his selfishness get in the way of loving and caring for his little brother.
