Since 1985 the total population for female prisoners has risen tremendously. More prisoners’ means more problems in the prison system unlike like males female prisoners have different needs than males do. For instance many women have traumatic and abusive pasts that they need to share or even that they need help getting over. Unlike males, female’s that are incarcerated have a greater likelihood of experiencing physical and sexual trauma. The result in this could lead to pain that often helps drive them into the most frequent convictions for women such as substance abuse and property crime to help their support addiction. Without programs that specifically target women’s abusive pasts and show them what healthy relationships actually look like, …show more content…
While the violence level in prison is usually really low it’s still a lot of bickering that goes on and controlling behavior. They typically blame others for their problems instead of blaming themselves. Values based programs that teach positive relationships can help incarcerated women in a way that no one can think of. Unlike males females generally do not receive as much family support as men that are in prison do. There is a greater family shame that happens when a woman goes to prison, and the family is often shown by refusal to visit or write letters. More than half of incarcerated women have minor children and its usually really tough for them to be separated from their kids. Separation from their children weighs heavily on incarcerated mothers, but it can also offer a special window for ministry. Many surveys of women prisoners find that three-fourths of them were mothers, with two-thirds having children under the age of eighteen. According to law.jrank.org argue that mothers in prison face multiple problems in maintaining relationships with their children and encounter obstacles created by both the correctional system and child welfare agencies. The distance between the prison and the children’s homes, lack of transportation and limited economic resources that help a woman prisoner's ability to maintain these relationships.
