The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is part of the Canadian Constitution. The Canadian Charter was created, signed, and acted upon starting from 1982. This took place when the 15th Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau wanted to bring the whole Constitution to Canada. In order to get certain documents signed by the provinces, the Charter had to be part of the Constitution as well. The Canadian society has a much more clear view of human rights and freedoms with the Charter, as it basically just lists everything that a citizen of Canada is entitled to. The Charter guides the government by defining its powers and limits, and holds what our common values are as a nation. In my opinion Canada’s future must have seemed like a bright one to Canadian citizens when the Charter was incorporated into the New Constitution. The first case in which the police searched through and seized/took documents which didn’t belong to them without any search warrant could have resulted in a huge and devastating blow on the Edmonton Journal office, but the company was barely affected, thanks to the Charter. The second case of still being able to cast a vote while in prison affected a lot of people. It affected them for the fact that people who have committed wrong such as murder should have all their freedom and rights removed, but unfortunately that was ruled by the court. The third case which regarded abortions was extremely controversial, because many people (especially religious people) disagree with the fact that a woman should have the right to be able to decide if she wants to go through pregnancy and childbirth or not.
