On Dec. 7, 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt gave the A Date Which Will Live In Infamy speech to the USA. In this speech he's trying to calm everyone down and reassure everyone that everything is going to be okay, because a great tragedy had just happen. Japan dropped bombs on a whole bunch of places and killed many. In this speech he is telling everyone that he is going to start a war agents japan because no one is going to harm us and get away with it. So in this speech I'm seeing a lot of rhetorical devices so lets talk about some of those.

In this speech Roosevelt uses pathos to make people get In there feelings and to shows that he really does care. Roosevelt state "I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost" (17). This is saying that he is very sadden, this is also telling how he feels guilty because he didn’t see the attack coming. He is showing the people that he actually cares. In this speech Roosevelt also used ethos to show that he is credible of being a good Christian I suppose. Roosevelt stated "We will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us god"

Roosevelt stated "Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Islands" (22-28). This is him trying to make people feel angry or sad that japan did that because he wants them to be on his side when he declares a war. In this speech Roosevelt also used parenthesis to make the other countries afraid to mess with America. Roosevelt stated "we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but we will make very certain that this for of treachery shall never endanger us again" (42-44).
