The history of human trafficking dates back to the period of conquest of the Americas and the trading of people from Africa; during these times the trafficking and enslavement of women, children and men were a common practice. However, these practices were often referred to as “slavery;” it is not until the past 60 years that the term Human Trafficking was officially coined. Perhaps one of the most important steps toward legally addressing the problem was the signing of the International Agreement for the Suppression of "White Slave Traffic" in 1904, which was created to stop the prostitution of white girls and women (“Timeline of Human Trafficking.”).
