Intimate Partner Violence in Popular Music
Introduction
Intimate partner violence occurs when a person is assaulted by someone with whom they are intimately involved; it is a very serious issue and many have spoken out about it. “Stone Cold Dead in the Market (He Had It Coming),” was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan and released in 1957 on Ella’s album, Ella and Her Fellas [Decca]. The song tells the story of a woman whose husband beat her, until one day she killed him. About 40 years later, Eminem released “’97 Bonnie & Clyde” on his album, The Slim Shady LP, in 1999. This song, on the other hand, is about a husband who killed his wife and her new family and is telling to his daughter about it. On the other contrary, “’97 Bonnie & Clyde” starts off with the sound of something being dragged and continues to have background noises that coincide with the story Eminem is telling. Intimate partner violence is a very serious crime that needs to be addresses and has been consistently present issue in society, as can be seen when examining songs such as those discussed above.
