A great tragedy, Hamlet, introduced to the world by the writer William Shakespeare, displays the importance of what can drive a person to do something. The protagonist, Hamlet, shows signs throughout the play of being revengeful and having irrational madness. Is Hamlet driven by revenge or craziness? In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare explores how extreme decision making can influence a person to make irrational decisions and perform serious measures, they wouldn't normally make.
After the death of Hamlet's father, his uncle Claudius takes over his father's spot as king and acts like everything's okay. Hamlet is then confronted by a ghost that seems to be his father. She is involved in this revenge and madness that drives Hamlet. She affects Hamlet in so many ways. Ophelia and Hamlet are somewhat in a romantic relationship, this just depends on the day. Some would say that Ophelia is the reason for Hamlet's madness and complicates the reasonable thinking of wanting to revenge his father's death. Also she gets in the way of Hamlet's plans and convolutes everything. Hamlet really does care about Ophelia, their love is not the normal compatient, inseparable love for one another. He insults her “Get thee to a nunnery”(3.1.45). Ophelia has her own insanity to deal with, she struggles several times throughout the play with her madness. Polonius, which is Ophelia's father, believes that Hamlet is not good for her. He thinks Hamlet is nothing but trouble and everything will be solved if he just goes to England. Polonius speaks as if he knows the reason for Hamlet's insanity. “Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t”(2.2.232).
