Isabel is a young Cuban girl from the novel “Refugee” by Alan Gratz. She is portrayed as being a caring and brave girl. Her family is struggling to survive in Cuba. Food is starting to get scarce in Cuba. Isabel still has hope and takes care of her family during this situation. Throughout the whole story, she loves her family and always wants them together. Furthermore, Isabel is brave enough to save anyone who is in trouble. Isabel cares and loves her family and doesn’t want to see it apart. On page 176, she is distressed about her mom leaving and her grandpa leaving “This wasn’t the way things were supposed to happen! Her family was supposed to be together”. The theme throughout the story is important and it's a big factor in her whole personality. …show more content…
Isabel is brave considering how young she is and what she was going through. Throughout the boat ride, she has grown more brave than ever in the book. At first, we can tell she isn’t eager to be on the boat and is always worried something bad might happen. On page 187 she tells herself to “fight against the impossible and win”. It tells the reader how she knows she is ready for anything that comes her way and ready to get to Florida. The book shows how Isabel reacts to events that happen to other characters. The other characters on this boat are considerably more anxious than Isabel. The book shows this on page 209, “Isabel wanted to scream too, but she was frozen. There was nothing she could do.” On this page, Seor Castillo and Luis act hysterically, seeing Iván dead. At some point, the reader would expect Isabel to be emotional about her best friend dying since she is young and isn’t experienced with death as much as the other characters on the
