Was Iwo Jima, one of the slowest and bloodiest battles in the Pacific, was it an important victory for the U.S, and did it set up the U.S where bombing Japan would be effective. Iwo Jima was a bloody battle where they had to fight for every inch, but the victory for the U.S was important because it set the U.S up in order for them to effectively bomb Japan.
The advantage of taking the island of Iwo Jima is it would get the U.S. in good distance to bomb the mainland of Japan. The military's idea was to use the island as a runway for the B-29 bombers. Iwo Jima was closer than Saipan which the U.S. had currently been using to bomb so taking the island would mean bombing Japan more effective and safer for the pilots as it would also be used as an emergency landing strip for any other bombers.Iwo Jima was also closer than the other U.S. bases in the Marianas. Iwo Jima would not only be a big win for taking a Japanese stronghold, but the advantage of using the island for a runway was a bigger success for the U.S. military.
